The Burbank Philharmonic Orchestra launched the Discovery Conductor Project in 2019. This unique program allows a select number of talented local high school students the opportunity to conduct the Burbank Philharmonic in rehearsal and performance while gaining valuable experience in all aspects of the Music Director’s role by studying with Music Director Michael Stanley. Applicants must be 18 years of age or younger and enrolled in a high school in the greater Los Angeles area.

Elise Fukuda, 2024 Discovery Conductor winner

The first Discovery Conductor was Elizabeth Kim, a senior at Glendale High School, who conducted the orchestra at their November 2, 2019 concert. The second Discovery Conductor was Pablo Fernandez, a Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (LACHSA) senior and YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) student, who conducted the orchestra at their April 15, 2023 concert. Most recently, the 2024 Discovery Conductor Award was presented to Elise Fukuda, a talented high school conductor recognized for her exceptional musicality, passion, and promising artistic future.

2026 DISCOVERY CONDUCTOR

High school senior Sky Lee, winner of the 2026 Burbank Philharmonic Discovery Conductor Project, studies at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, where he serves as principal bassoonist of the Chamber Orchestra. He has performed with ensembles including the Philadelphia International Music Festival, the California All-State Band, and the Stanford Summer Symphony. Sky is also dedicated to community engagement through music, and leads Classic4U, a student organization that brings live performances to elderly communities and local shelters.
