Conductor Laureate

Conductor Steven Kerstein was the Burbank Philharmonic’s founding Music Director and held the baton for over 30 years until his transition into his current role as Conductor Laureate.  During his tenure with the orchestra, he earned a reputation as a charismatic conductor who challenges the musicians and audiences alike with his interpretations of standard and modern orchestral literature.  The Wall Street Journal once described him as “a competitive, energetic, in-your-face conductor who has the artistic and business acumen to create extraordinary musical events.”

A popular guest conductor in the United States and abroad, he has conducted premieres of numerous critically acclaimed works for symphony orchestra and performed with many world-famous artists, including violinist Roberto Cani, Metropolitan Opera star Richard Bernstein and Los Angeles Opera’s Suzanna Guzman. During his time with the orchestra, he established a national reputation for the Philharmonic with major profiles in the Wall Street Journal, ABC News, and the Los Angeles Times, which called him “the secret to the Orchestra’s success.
